History of CHSA
The Construction History Society of America (CHSA) was organized in May 2007 as the United States branch of the Construction History Society (CHS), originally based in the United Kingdom. Since its founding, CHSA has grown into a vibrant and active network of scholars, architects, engineers, preservationists, and builders dedicated to advancing the study of construction history across the Americas.
Over the years, CHSA has expanded its reach and influence by hosting eight biennial meetings in cities across the country: Atlanta (2008), Philadelphia (2010), Boston (2012), Minneapolis (2014), Austin (2016), College Park, MD (2018), Kennesaw State University, GA (2022), and Urbana-Champaign, IL (2023). Recognizing the importance of continual exchange, we have also held smaller off-year gatherings to explore specific themes and foster collaboration with allied organizations.
CHSA members share a deep interest in understanding how structures—historic and modern—were planned, designed, and constructed. By uncovering the methods and materials of the past, we seek to enrich contemporary practice and inform preservation efforts. As a society, we are committed to expanding the knowledge of construction history both nationally and internationally through scholarship, dialogue, and public engagement.
Membership in CHSA includes full benefits in the global CHS network, including access to the Society’s journal and an international community of experts in the field. As a distinct and growing organization, CHSA continues to play a key role in shaping the discourse around construction history in the United States and beyond.
